Horror Movie Binge Thus Far

When I was younger, I absolutely hated horror movies. However, as I got older and started to read more Stephen King, I started to crave some of those heart-wrenching scares. Here are some of the horror movies that I have seen thus far over the summer. Some of them are fantastic, whereas others make me question as to why I wasted a part of my life on this.

No particular order, just listing them.

1. The Ouija Experiment

I wasted an hour and 14 minutes of my life on this terrible excuse for a horror movie. I should have known that the movie was going to be terrible, based upon the Rotten Tomatoes approval rating and the 2 star rating on Netflix, but still I decided to go through with it anyway. See, I had more fun researching Ouija boards and the stories behind its use than actually watching the movie. There were barely any jumpscares, and the "jumpscares that did occur were not scary AT ALL. The acting was mediocre...And that's just being nice. The concept would have been nice if they had spent more time thinking about the storyline, especially since it didn't really make sense. I kept bonking my head against the table at how ridiculous this movie was, and was shocked to see that a second movie had came out. I will definitely not watch the sequel.

2. Oculus

I like having to think in movies, so Oculus was one horror movie that I enjoyed. See, in the movie, a brother and a sister witness a harrowing experience that had left the brother in a psychiatric institute for a while and the parents dead. Why? Because of cursed antique mirror that hung in their house. Flash forward to the present day and you see the sister obsession over getting revenge on the mirror and the brother eventually joining in as well.

Folks, this isn't any regular haunted mirror: The mirror plays tricks on the mind in order to prevent itself from getting destroyed. Thus, during the entire last half of the movie, you are left to think: Is this actually happening, or is the mirror playing a trick? The frustration rises and you eventually scream at the inability to figure out what is real and not real (or at least I did...).

3. Poltergeist (1982)

I had been wanting to see this movie for a while, so when I found it at the library, I immediately grabbed it and watched it with my younger sister and mom. The graphics obviously weren't as good, and while the movie didn't scare me, it certainly creeped me out, especially when those bodies emerged from the pool...I didn't appreciate the toy clown either.

4. Hush

Hush takes on the typical intruder who wants to kill the protagonist plot, but there's the huge difference from all the other slasher films that I've encountered: The protagonist is deaf. Knowing that she cannot hear if she's breathing too loudly or that the intruder is coming towards her definitely put me on the edge of my seat. Just watch the trailer for a better explanation, because mine was pretty bad.

5. Para Elisa

Well, I actually skimmed through this one last night and had to use English subtitles, since it was obviously in Spanish, but I was actually interested throughout the entire thing. Ana is a fine arts student who agrees to take care of a widow's mentally challenged child as she prepares for her piano concert. However, when she realizes that this "child" is actually a grown woman like herself, she immediately declines, but is unknowingly drugged by the old woman and is made to be a "life-size doll" for her daughter.

This list will most likely be updated as I watch more horror movies! Ciao ;)
